Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
Off there next week so I would appreciate the usual WHO tips for bars/sights and places to watch the game.

Thanks in advance

Have spent much of the afternoon walking around Angkor Wat on google maps. I fancy a trip there when I go to Thailand in July/August.

I stayed at the Yellow Guest House, I think, which was 'cheap as chips' but fine (fit for purpose!)

Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
Angkor Wat is excellent. You could take a taxi from the Thai border at Aranya Prathet if you are visiting Thailand, just for ref. Takes about 3-4 hours max. I went about two years ago and only had two days, which is enough to see quite a lot of the temple sites, which are incredible. I had a guide from a guest house, which was very affordable and he just took me from site to site - I called him back when I needed picking up. Could probably have done with another day or so, a week is probably too long, but not if you are into the culture and/or photography. It's worth going to the temple site at sunrise. There is a good mix of Buddhist and Hindu temple sites, along with incredible faces carved in rock (don't know 'technically' what these are known as ... anyway, Enjoy! But as another poster said, it's not really a nightlife kinda place ...

It's going to depend on circumstances. If you are a local hire then it will probably be reasonably modest although much higher than a local. If, however, you are on an expat package you could do very well with all the add-ons and taking account of the cost of living.

I know a few people who live and work in Phnom Penh and they love it. They are mostly French though.

What are salaries like for westerners in Cambodia? under the impression they would be very low. got a relative just moved there and I don't understand why Cambodia yes sure it is beautiful country etc. but it is 3rd world compared to other parts of Asia

Tuol Sleng (S21) is in Phnom Penh and now houses the Genocide Museum. Doing Choeung Ek and Tuoi Sleng in one day is sobering as Brucie says.

Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
The killing fields and S21 are a sobering experience.

The tuk tuk driver suggested the firing range after as apparently shooting a cow with a bazooka or taking an AK47 to a chicken are the tourist's activity of choice. Wasn't really in the mood for it.

One word of advice if you do make it to Phnom Penh, Don't go to a 'karaoke bar'.

Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
Monk - That's what I thought, been there twice, although there may also be a 'killing fields' near SR too, but I don't recall. S21 near PP too.

Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
Yes, the same Pol Pot who continued to be supported by the British Government well into the mid 80's and long after the killing fields were known about. Shocking.

By the way the main Killing Fields sites are near Phnom Penh rather than Siem Reap.

Oh and go to the Killing fields and S21.

Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
Yeah, a visit to The Killing Fields is an eye-opener...

Can't believe that Pol Pot and all those other mudering loonies weren't executed in the most humiliating, degrading, painful way for what they done...

Angkor Wat is amazing, I've been all over the world and this place is one of my favourite places I've seen, it's truly incredible.
The actual buildings that are still there and the sculptures blew me away.

In Siem Reap you can visit the Killing Fields and prison there, pretty eerie.

Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
I struggled recently to watch our game with Hull out there but there was a bar at the far end of pub street with it on with no sound, try your hotel as it may be on there!
If you have not booked hotel get in The Ankgor palace spa and resort as it really is a top gaff!

Maybe I was unlucky. Did the same as you. Took a tuk-tuk to the boat station but on the boat trip (which was not expensive itself) it was all attempts to grab money and con you into buying a big bag of rice at an inflated price to give to the kid's/ orphan's school. And the floating market wasn't a market but a couple of floating stores with no fresh produce.

I really enjoyed the floating market. Didn't cost much either - we just paid a cabbie to drive us there then about $20 for a boat tour.

As for bars, Pub Street is the place. Think there's a bar called Angkor What? which gets quite lively.

A week??

Fuck that.

Monk~koknee 5:22 Fri Mar 13
Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
Nice place that it is a week is a long time in Siem Reap. Avoid the trip to Ton Le Sap lake and the floating market. A rip off.

Re: Siem Reep/Ankor Wat
Will be there for a week. Obviously will do the temples as that's been on my bucket list for some time but wanted to know what else.
